KapCon History

KapCons Past...

The first KapCon in the current unbroken chain of yearly events was held in 1993 at Coastlands Mall in Paraparaumu, on the Kapiti Coast, organized by David Ward. In 1995 David moved to Wellington to attend Victoria University, and so KapCon, originally named for the Kapiti region, became Wellington's regular annual role-playing convention

David came up with the name KapCon independently in 1993, but many years earlier in the 1970s, the Kapiti Military Miniatures Society (KMMS) ran a war-gaming convention under the same name. The name in both cases was a contraction of 'Kapiti Convention'

Although KapCon's are currently numbered, the numbering wasn't begun until KapCon IX, in 2000, and as you can see from this history, the numbering was wrong, and it should really have been KapCon VII! Blame lack of continuity and contact with the original organizers. We only confirmed this in 2007, when David Ward found our site!
