A play reading of William Shakespeare's Star Wars: The Empire Striketh Back by Ian Doescher

The saga that began with the reading of William Shakespeare's Star Wars continues with this merry reimagining of George Lucas's enduring classic The Empire Strikes Back.

Many a fortnight have passed since the destruction of the Death Star. Young Luke Skywalker and his friends have taken refuge on the ice planet of Hoth, where the evil Darth Vader has hatched a cold-blooded plan to capture them. Only with the help of a little green Jedi Master—and a swaggering rascal named Lando Calrissian—can our heroes escape the Empire's wrath. And only then will Lord Vader learn how sharper than a tauntaun's tooth it is to have a Jedi child.

What light through Yoda's window breaks? Methinks you'll find out in the reading of of The Empire Striketh Back!

Engine Heart is a game about little robots. When the humans were around, nobody paid any attention to them, but now that the humans are gone, the robots are on their own in a world that's falling apart.

Childermas Atoll has been gradually eroding into the ocean, but Cyclone Hilda appears to have accelerated its demise. In the aftermath of the cyclone, there has been no contact from anyone on the island. Satellite pictures suggest that Stella Maris Mission and the Happy Squid processing complex are the only major buildings that survived the storm. An Emergency Response team was dispatched by seaplane from Auckland yesterday, but ceased transmitting en route.

Now you are on your way to Childermas. Your official role is to find and assist any survivors and clear the airfield so supplies and emergency personnel can be flown in. But as agents of a secret international taskforce, you are expecting trouble of a different kind.

The Ice Forest

Facilitator:

Survivors of a crash, you eke out a tenuous survival in the midst of an alien forest. Fortunately, you stumbled across a structure soon after arriving, which provides shelter, but also suggests you weren’t the first to pass this way. It’s difficult to remember how long you’ve been here, as if the cold has frozen you in time, it could have been last week, or it could have been years ago. All you know is the present. Occasionally you catch a flicker of movement out of the corner of your eye, as if there are others out there among the trees, or it could just be your imagination.
Then one day a stranger arrives.

The Terror of London

London, England, 2015

The latest headline in the Daily Mail read "Terror Killing Continues, Police Mystified" and went into morbid detail about the latest murder. Like all the others, this one was a wealthy but largely unknown businessman, murdered in his own home by an unknown assailant who left no DNA evidence or fingerprints of any kind, nor any indication of breaking into the victim's house. Each of the five victims had all been killed in the same way - their bones shattered and their bodies broken, looking like they had been beaten with a sledgehammer for a week.

In a rare example of perfect honesty, the Daily Mail was correct when it said police were mystified. In this modern age of forensic teams, in-depth analysis and the marvels of online records, it was odd that a crime scene would throw up no clue as to the nature of the attacker. But before consigning the murders to the realm of unsolved cases, Detective Inspector Pauline McCullough of Scotland Yard has turned to another side of investigations that she knows of.

She has turned to the Monster Hunters. You.

Monster of the Week is probably best described as "B Movie Gaming". It's absolutely raucous fun, and always comes with over the top shenanigans and intense confrontations. You play the part of a monster hunter, one of those who has seen the impossible, the paranormal or the eldritch. Each game plays like an episode of those Monster of the Week shows like Buffy The Vampire Slayer or Doctor Who. You identify the monster, find it, and stop it monstering. Simple as that.

This particular game is set in modern day London and well, the rest is spoilers. What is nice about MotW is that you don't need any form of preparation, you only need to bring 2 six sided dice and some monster hunting ingenuity (and I will provide the 2d6 if you need it!).

Humanity stands on the cusp of a new age, with accelerated technological growth converging toward a singularity point, promising an undreamt-of future. Despite the ecopocalypse and social upheavals on Earth, humanity has conquered the solar system and partially terraformed Mars. Advancements in biotechnology, nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, and cognitive science have transformed our lives. Everyone is wirelessly networked with the world around them, AIs process vast amounts of information, and nano-fabrication enables people to “print” complex devices from the molecular level—at home. Biotechnology allows people to genefix, enhance, and clone their bodies, while others pursue body modifications to adapt to new environments or make themselves into something no longer quite human. People’s minds and memories can be digitized, uploaded, transferred over long distances, and downloaded into new bodies (biological or synthetic). Death has been defeated—for those who can afford it.

Some days you're so busy you have to be in more than one place at the same time. That's no problem! Upload your mindstate, fork it into copies each for its own chore, use standard tools to clip away the unnecessary memories and cut down that file size, and send them far afield - and when they come home, merge yourself together again. Nothing to worry about.

But today you're back at home on Mars, along with your other forks, and your original self's gone missing.

That's bad.
