The Madness of Their Judgment

Facilitator:
Ivan Towlson

On your travels back from the Trojan War to your homes in Greece, you have seen many troubled lands, but the city of Nisyros must have given the gravest offence of all to the gods. The women of the city have been driven to madness and have fled into the mountains and forests. The king of Nisyros has appealed to you to save them, but thwarting the fury of a god is easier said than done!

Of course, the quarrels of gods and kings are ten to an obol. Your interest is glory – the glory of greatness in battle, in word, and in spirit – glory that will echo down the ages in poem and song. That is why you sweat and bleed. But only one of you can go down in legend as the saviour of Nisyros. Who among you will be immortalised with their own star in the heavens? And whose grave will be forgotten along with their deeds? Enter the agon, and prove the glory of your name.

In 1910 the Turnbull family were brutally murdered in their home. The reason why was never discovered, but over the years a number of brutal and increasingly outlandish tales have been told. A tradition has also started amongst students and lovers of ghost stories to stay the night in the abandoned “Turnbull House” on the night that the murders happened, Oct 16th.

This is the 100 year anniversary and the group who spend the night here this year will get more than they bargained for.

LARP: Bad Dreams: Purgatory

Facilitator:
Ivan Essin

Written by Ivan (Vanya) Essin, Gareth Sandford, Robert Birtles-Crute, Porl Bowdler

Three years ago, a wealthy, upper class recluse was found dead. Albert Tenneford Trismegistus died of natural causes, a heart attack, could happen to anyone, especially at such an old age. But you don't believe that for a second now do you? Guilt, you either have it or you don't, and I'm not talking about the type of guilt that you feel, I'm talking about the guilt that binds one person to another. The type that no therapy can ever free you from.

So as you take your final breath in this world, answer me these questions. Are you afraid? Is your soul clean? Surely it might scare you just a little that it might matter?

Escaping responsibility is easy in our world. Now open your eyes, see how easy it is in the next.

Bad Dreams is a supernatural horror larp, with emphasis on heavy roleplaying above all else. Please be advised the game contains highly mature and offensive content.

Backstage at High Fructose

Facilitator:

High Fructose is the music festival that any band that's anything on the music-that's-only-cool-if-too-many-people-haven't-heard-of-it circuit would sacrifice their favourite vintage leather jackets to play in. This year's headlining acts are lo-fi gods Hive Engine and twee pop darlings The Penny Dreadfuls, and the event's had its highest turnout yet- Several extra Nebraska cornfields had to be bulldozed just to contain the crowds.

Unfortunately, the headlining bands' long-standing rivalry has come to a head. Hive Engine's guitarist stole the Penny Dreadful's drummer's drugs, or The Penny Dreadful's maraca player slept with Hive Engine's bassist's boyfriend, or something equally stupid. No one's really sure what happened -partly due to both bands' willingness to let unfounded accusations about the other fly- but the important thing is that both Hive Engine and The Penny Dreadfuls have announced their refusal to go on unless the other agrees to drop out of the festival.

As a last resort, the event manager has ordered everyone to sit down and settle their differences. Whether it's through respectful negotiation or the result of a booze-fuelled stupor isn't important- There are only three hours to go, and if this doesn't get sorted out the media will pounce on the train wreck that's sure to ensue and ensure that High Fructose becomes the festival that everyone's heard of- For entirely the wrong reasons.

Sometimes, you can see the bad shit coming in advance. Take this email that just arrived, for example. On the surface, there is nothing wrong with it — just a form email from Human Resources, politely checking to make sure certain documents are in order. Do you have a valid passport? Are you inoculated against various tropical diseases? Did you pass your last medical check? All innocent on the surface, but something's up. The Laundry doesn't send people at your pay grade abroad except to mind-numbingly dull conference meetings and suicide missions; you are not sure which is worse.

Now you have another one - this time HR wants to know if your next of kin registration is still valid. Uh-oh...

The third email of the morning might as well be titled ‘RE: Bad Shit’. It is actually entitled ‘Meeting 10:30 room C4’ but the cc list includes someone called ventry@sis.gov.uk...

Welcome to sunny Nuristan—possibly the most isolated and inaccessible bit of Afghanistan, high in the Hindu Kush. It is home to lots of people who want to kill us all. It is also home to Alga Akhan, an Afghan warlord who might be a vital ally... or a worshipper of an alien god. Or both. It is up to the characters to make that call.
